The road to hell is paved with good intentions... Meaning, I don't update here very often, but I do run an on line book club now, so if your interested in what I am currently reading, check it out here
Well I decided that given how much I read, it might be a decent idea to put down somewhere what I read and how I like it. It seems that overtime, I sometimes forget what I read, so I thought putting it down in writing would be a good idea
On a monthly basis I read a variety of comic books. Mainly Poison Elves, Gloom Cookies (when there is a new issue) and different Sandman comics that my brother finds me. I have managed to slowly gather a comic collection, yes I am turning into a comic dork, but so it goes.....as for the books I have been reading see below
Chainfire by Terry Goodkind
This was the next in the Sword of Truth series. I really enjoyed it as I have the others, but it was one hell of a cliff hanger.
Spindle's End by Robin McKinley
I love re-tellings of old fantasies. This one was a spin off of rapunzel and it really was enjoyable.
Beauty by Robin McKinley
A retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Again amazing. I am really glad I found McKinley as her writing is wonderful.
Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Chosen and Kushiel's Avatar by Jacqueline Carey
This was a series recommended to me by a good friend and they are wonderful. It has that mix of a geisha world in it and the strong female heroines. It was amazing. I really enjoyed the first three books and look forward to the next one.
Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz
This was a delightful book. It was fun, fast paced, and action packed. It dealt with fate and what we do with our lives. I really enjoyed it.
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
Well it was Neil Gaiman, so of course I enjoyed it. i didn't see it like a sequel to American Gods at all. Yes there were gods involved but it was a different sort of gods and it was dealing more with their only little microcosims as opposed to the rest of the population. All in all i found it enjoyable and am thrilled that I got a chance to read it.
Four and Twenty Blackbirds (re-released) by Cherie Priest
I read this book when it was first published a while back and greatly enjoyed it so when I was informed that it would be re-released under tor with added material I was bouncy with excitement. Of course the fact that the author is a delightful person from lj always help. But the writer aside, I loved the book. It gave me chills. It has been a long time since I have read a ghost story that gave me goosebumps. I can't wait for book2.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling
I didn't enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed the others. I felt like it was a filler book. I enjoyed it, but not enough things happened and the way Harry's friends treated him and didn't trust him just bugged me. I will of course read the whole series again at some point to see if things change.
Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
This was also a great book. I am looking forward to reading his books about NASA
The Wooden Sea by Jonathan Carrol
I hated this book. The plot was this huge build up that had no real ending to it.
Enchantment by Orson Scott Card
This was an amazing book. I loved the parallels with sleeping beauty. It was a wonderful retelling of an old classic
Sunshine by Robin McKinley
This book was a page turner. I couldn't put it down. The plot was like nothing I had ever read before, it was a whole new kind of vampire novel.
Tale of the Body Thief by Anne Rice
This was one of the better vampire series books. I still can't seem to motivate to read the next one, but I did enjoy this one for the most part
The Bonesetter Daughter by Amy Tan
This was a truely wonderful book and made me want to write down my own story to pass along to my children.
Enders Game by Orson Scott Card
I was hesitant about this book as I don't normally do sci fi but I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters but damn I felt bad for those kids.
Angels & Demons by Dan Brown
Wow! this book was a page turner and well the timing of me reading it seems to be preety decent since the pope just died. Strange
Sleeping in Flames by Jonathan Carrol
This was an amazing book and one based on an old fairy tale. It had a supernatural element that had me entranced
Wicked
Holy crap! another book that took me completely by surprise. It was amazing. All the political aspects of the wizard of Oz. And it really made me think about the "villains" in my life and what could have driven them to be "villains"
Gallilee by Clive Barker
What a beautiful book! Clive Barkers writing always impresses me, but this book was magnificent. The imagery and the story line were just wonerful
Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice
The next in the vampire series. I liked the last 100 pages or so, but the rest of it I had a hard time with cause it jumped around a bit too much for my liking. And well now I am even more disappointed with the movie than I was before
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
OMG! this was a wonderful book. I had to fight back tears over and over again. It broke my heart, but at the same time touched me in a way a book hasn;t in a long time. I recommend it to anyone and everyone, but be ready for a tearjerker
The Vampire Lestat by Anee Rice
I have decided to read this series cause my brother kept telling me to. I read the mayfair witches series by anne rice, but coule never get into the vampire chronicles. Well this time around I seem to be able to get into it ok. I like the book, but I must say i was distracted by the Queen of the Damned movie since the first part of the movie is all from Vampire Lestat
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Breathtaking!
The Dream Hunters by Neil Gaiman
This was absolutely breath taking. The story, the artwork, all of it. Amazing
The Endless Nights by Neil Gaiman
This was the latest installment on the Sandmen Novels, kind of a foreward where he describes where all the endless came from. It was awesome
The Soulforge by Margaret Weis
Another book in the dragonlance series I borrowed from Moose. Typical dragon lance book, a nice light read
Four and Twenty Blackbirds by Cherrie Priest
This was a book written by a lovely girl on Livejournal that I found. It was a great horror/suspense novel. So anyone reading this should go and buy it and support a newly published writer
Diary of a Mad Bride by Laura Wolf
This book was loaned to me by a friend since I will be getting married next year. It was histerical. I pray that i don't end up like that while planning my wedding, but I will take comfort inthe fact that if I do there are plenty of women out there who understand
One Door Away from Heaven by Dean Koontz
This was the last book I was gonna read before school started and I had no more time. It is the first Dean Koontz book I have read in a long while and for the life of me, I can't figure out why I stopped reading his stuff because it is amazing. His books always give me chills and this one was no exception. It was truely intriguing and in many ways, very scarey, but I loved it and could barely put it down!
Coraline by Neil Gaimam
This was absolutely amazing! Neil Gaiman never cease to amaze me!
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K.Rowling
I liked the 5th book quite alot. There were parts that bothered me, but for the most part i enjoyed this one. My only real complaint was that it didn't seem as though Harry Potter was really allowed to grieve at the end. That may be addressed in the next book, but this book just seemed to lack the closure I was looking for.
Test of the Twins by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman
This was the 3rd book in a 3-part series of the dragonlance legends. The ending was quite good.
Bridget Jones Diary by helen fielding
I wanted to kill the character in this book. She was soooo damn irritating. I honestly don't recommend it to anyone
The Pillars of Creation by Terry Goodkind
This was an absolutely amazing book!!! definitely one of the best in the series
War of the Twins by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman
Another dragonlance novel. This one took a while for me to get into but once I did, I really liked it
The Hours by Michael Cunningham
What an incredible book!! I was hesitant to read this at first, simply because it didn't look like it would appeal to me. But, it was just amazing...on so many different levels.
Time of the Twins by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman
Another dragonlance novel. The reason I read these books so i can lose myself while reading. sometimes I just don't want to think and this type of book lets me do just that. the plot is interesting and it moves quickly. of course it haveing a cliff hanger ending is frustrating, but only makes me want to read more which i suppose is the whole idea
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur S. Golden
This book was absolutely amazing! It grabbed me and pulled me through a world that I have never seen before. It is truely one of the best books I have read in a long time. It was simply wonderful and I think everyone should read it!
Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman
these were wonderful short stories. i have a certain affinity for short stories since that is what i write, but they were spectacular. highly recommended
Sandman Book IX and X by Neil Gaiman
What a wonderful ending to an incredible tale!
Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice
This was my second attempt at reading this book. I liked it better the second time around and look forward to reading the rest of the series. At the moment, I still prefer the Mayfair Witches series.
Faith of the Fallen by Terry Goodkind
This is the 6th book in the Sword of Truth Series and it was quite good. I read it for 7 hours straight while on the planeride home from London. So this book got me thinking...I began to wonder about the intensity of characters in books. They always seem to be so intense, about the people they love, their lives, everything in general. I wonder is that real? Do people actually live like that? It has been quite sometime since a book got me thinking this much? It feels good.
The Girl Who Heard Dragons by Anne McCaffrey
Ok so after I read this book, I was informed that unless I had read her other books it wouldn't make sense. Damn! Anyway so it is a compilation of short stories and though they are well written, I found them to be frustrating. I may try to read another of her books, but we'll see. For now since my time is so limited, I will stick with the what I know I like. I have a couple of others of hers, but I have to figure out what series they are from and what order to read them as the books don't really tell you. Something to do when I have more time on my hands.
Amercan Gods by Neil Gaiman
This book was quite good. Gaiman has a way of just taking everyday things and making them extraordinary. He has a way of making you see beyond the obvious. He pulls you in and doesn't let go. This book dealt with all the different gods, gods of the past and gods of the present. It is a great concept
and well worth the time it took me to read. Now what to read next?
Dragons of Spring Dawning by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
And the third book proved to be the best.
Dragons of Winter Night by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
This is the second book in the dragonlance trilogy that Moose gave me. It was better than the first one. The characters are certainly more interesting now. I have started the final one. I am certainly interested to see how it ends.
Sandman Book V thru VIII by Neil Gaiman
Captivating as always.
Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
Moose gave me like 11 books and this is the first of the series. At first I thought it was gonna be awful. The first 40 pages are a tad dry, but once the action kicked in it was great. A nice read. Not sure when I will get to the next ones in the series...my book shelevs are full of books and they are all calling my name.
Soul of the Fire by Terry Goodkind
This is book 5 from the Sword of Truth series. Surprisingly enough all the books in this series so far have been very good. They have kept my attention and been very good reads. Graphic at points, but not overly so
The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkein
And now I have closure. The evil ring has been destroyed and these funny litle hobbits live happily ever after, well all except for Frodo. I still think that this trilogoy that is really 4 books is amazing to read after all these years. Well on to my next series
The Two Towers by J.R.R Tolkein
It is kinda creepy after all that has happened to write down the title 'The Two Towers'. It is weird to read a book titled as such and to read about the war that occurs and these indestructable towers. And then to look back on all that has happened this last year. The book was as all other Tolkein books have been, a pleasure to read. Reading has always been an escape from me. I started reading alot at a young age. It allowed me to use my imagination and to escape life in general. To this day I use reading for that purpose, but with this book, I kept being reminded of the Towers in New York, of their destruction and the destruction of our feeling of safety. When those towers fell our hope faltered, our dreams became slightly out of reach. And just as the characters fought on, even though hope was lost so do we. We continue to live our lives and beat down the fear that was trying to consume us. We will not let them create terror. We will not let them run our lives. That is one of the most amazing things about books. Even when written in a time past they can still hold value for today.
Sandman Book I thru IV by Neil Gaiman
These novels are phenomenal. They take me to this realm that is so far fetched but somehow it still feels real. The characters come to life. I sit and wonder at the feeling of being trapped in eternal torment because your lover sent you there. I am reminded of my fear of being trapped and have shivers run down my spine at the thought of Morpheus being trapped for centuries in a ball. And then I think of my dream world and how there are times that it feels so real. When I wake up aching in my bones. I truely look forward to finishing off this series. I have yet to order book 5 and 6.
The Fellowhip of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkein
It is sometimes quite nice to read something that is familiar, something that almost feels like home. Having read these books so many times, I actually feel like I know the characters and I have all these scenes played out in my head. As always I was mesmerized by the evolving story. One thing that I did notice, with other books I seem to fly right through them, but this series I like to take my time and enjoy them.
The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkein
I decided to re read the entire fellowhip series... this is probably the 5th or 6th time and I love them still. It amazes me how much these books can still intrigue me after all this time. They are such a part of my childhood.
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchet
This book was histerical...it was great to read.. full of sarcasm and so real to life. Having been brought up in Catholic Schools, it was funny to read this very liberal interpretation on the end of the world. If it were to go down like that it would certainly make it entertaining.
